The Lionel Collectors Club of America (LCCA) is home to one of the most prominent member organizations of model train collectors in the world. Our site offers news, photos, videos, and event information to all Lionel train enthusiasts, and our worldwide membership of nearly 10,000 enjoy additional benefits including an exclusive network to buy, sell, and trade Lionel model trains and other brands.
The LCCA is proud to introduce its next Lionel Train Set offering. Our last train set was a freight set (the Texas Special) was introduced in 2013 and was a quickly sold out. Additional cars were added to this set for a few years.
This new set is an SP Black Widow FT Diesel with three passenger cars all painted in the Black Widow livery paint scheme. The Black Widow design has been celebrated as one of the best yet it lasted only for a few years, It did require 4 individual paint colors (black, orange, red and silver) and required considerable masking to get right consuming lots of time and money.
The Southern Pacific Black Widow earned its name from the distinctive black and red color scheme of its passenger cars, which mirrored the striking appearance of the black widow spider. This dramatic color palette was not just an aesthetic choice but a bold statement that set the train apart from its contemporaries. The Black Widow service was introduced in the mid-20th century with the bold color scheme an attempt by SP to brand its freight service.
OK, there is little if any evidence that the Southern Pacific painted any of its passenger cars with the Black Widow livery. But it is known that some Black Widow F-units originally built for freight use, were fitted with boilers allowing them to pull passenger cars. They were frequently seen with a string of daylight cars behind them.
Our LCCA design team wanted to create a set that had the feel and charm of the golden age of railroading and provide a glimpse on what would have been a highly recognizable branding. The cars offered on this set are unique for a few reasons. First, they are the first regular Lionel production passenger cars offered with the Black Widow colors. Second, The LCCA offering includes a dome car, unusual in a 3-car set. Third, the three passenger cars are named for three past presidents of the UP (Crocker, Phelps, and Hopkins).
This set is full of great Lionel features like LionChief, Bluetooth, Railsound, Lionel Voice Control and more. It will be produced in a single run, not to be reproduced. The SKU 2401200 has been assigned and the set will be offered exclusively through the LCCA. (lionelcollectors.org).
Order quantities on this set will be limited to 300 units. Once they are sold, they are gone. Do not wait to order this set. Get yours now, or like the full size Southern Pacific Black Widow’s, will be only a pleasant memory.
Be sure to order early, in fact ORDER TODAY. Price including shipping is $430. Shipping expected early December, In time for the Christmas Holiday. What a Great Gift this fantastic set will be!
